Bruce, Barry and Alan Stockwell’s brand of newgrass and contemporary folk music covers straight ahead bluegrass songs, finger picked acoustic guitar ballads, full tilt breakdowns and traditional mandolin tunes mixed in with more unusual fare: Americana melodies riding funk, reggae and Latin grooves, new singer/songwriter gems recast with 5-string banjo and trio harmonies, Celtic, jazzy, even neo-classical instrumentals... Down home meets modern folk meets world beat.
After almost four decades working together in southern Vermont (alongside a host of artists from Bill Monroe, Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs to Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Jonathan Edwards and Asleep At The Wheel), The Stockwell Brothers are the area's senior bluegrass ambassadors and a Green Mountain institution. Fans further afield first heard of them on two Flying Fish albums with Mike Auldridge and Phil Rosenthal of the bluegrass supergroup, The Seldom Scene. The Stockwells have performed throughout the United States and in Canada and Europe, and have released two albums, Stobro and Leave My Dreams Alone, as a trio. Bruce Stockwell is the 2005 bluegrass banjo contest winner at Merlefest, a four day celebration of American roots music held annually in Wilkesboro, N.C.
